Manna/Kennett Aviation - 12/09/95 first flight post-restoration as "XR993" in Red Arrows scheme - 02/05/03 to Red Gnat Ltd, North Weald - 17/09/04 whilst approaching the circuit to land at North Weald Airfield, the engine lost power. As the pilot considered that the aircraft had insufficient energy to complete the turn on to final approach, he elected not to order an ejection and landed the aircraft wheels up in a partially ploughed field, approximately one nautical mile to the north-west of the airfield. With a landing speed of approximately 160 knots and approximately 800 lbs of fuel on board, the aircraft touched town, bounced and then slid to a halt with minimal damage. There was no fire and both occupants made their escape unaided. No definitive technical cause could be established for the loss of power but it was considered likely that a restriction in the fuel supply to the engine had occurred late into the flight. Sustained damage to lower fuselage - 22/05/09 registration cancelled by CAA - 26/08/10 by road to Bruntingthorpe - 06/04/19 to SWAM - 26/06/24 temporarily to Heveningham Hall, Norfolk for an event - returned to SWAM 02/07/24

History 1945 Built at Hawker Aircraft Ltd, Langley as MW758 - 1947 allocated to India via Hawkers - 25/05/48 Hawker Aircraft bought 113 Tempest IIs from surplus RAF stocks at 20 MU Aston Down. 89 of these were refurbished and sold to India as RIAF HA547-645 - 01/06/48 TOC Indian Air Force as HA580 - 02/69 Nine derelict Tempest IIs discovered at Poona, five at least with wings and undercarriages; RAF PR555,659,756,779,834,867,901, and IAF serials HA622 and HA580/MW758/M. All had reportedly moved on by 1972 to an unknown destination, but 1979 photos show nine fuselages in external store at Poona amongst well-established scrub - 1977 Realising that IAF Tempests were the only Mk IIs left, the Indian Government put up 11 Tempest airframes for auction as a complete lot at Jodhpur and Poona. Of these, seven composite Tempest airframes (HA 557 (MW404), HA564 (MW376), HA580 (MW 758), HA586 (MW 763), HA591 (MW 810), HA604 (MW 401) and HA 457 (PR536)) were purchased by the late Doug Arnold of Warbirds of Great Britain. They had been stored outside in dry conditions for many years and were mostly complete with engines but missing propellers and often tailplanes and rudders. The remaining aircraft were apparently scrapped in India as being beyond recovery and uneconomic to transport, or, allegedly, to preserve the rarity value of those recovered. By 1979 they were still at Poona, stored as fuselages only - 1979 The WOGB Tempests finally arrived crated at Blackbushe, UK - 1980 all seven to Nick Grace & Chris Horsley/Tangmere Flight, Chichester, Sussex - ?? HA580 to Gerry Cooper/ Tempest Two Ltd, Sandtoft, later Gamston later Wickenby - two dismantled Tempests stored in yard, Hemswell 90/04, believed to have been MW404 & MW758 - ?? Barry Parkhouse, Wycombe Air Park - 2021 H Cooper & M Burg, Haverfordwest for restoration to fly - 23-26/02/23 to SWAM on loan

The student had inadvertently turned off the fuel and ignition. The pilot was demonstrating an engine failure after take-off and then opened the throttle but there was no response from the engine. The pilot then asked the student if the switches were on and he replied that they were. The pilot then attempted again but without success and so a forced landing was made short of the airfield. In the subsequent investigation, it transpired that the student had misunderstood some comments made by the instructor pilot so had closed the ignition switches and only put them back on when asked if they were on by the pilot. The exercise had not been briefed beforehand and the student's inexperience was a contributing factor - deemed to be beyond economical repair, and struck off charge as Cat.5(G/I) - reduced to cockpit section - 05/06/68 allocated 8019M to 391 (Wilmslow) Sqn ATC, Handforth, Cheshire as "Chippax" - c97 departed to ? - 28/07/07 sold to South Moulton, Devon - 18/07/08 to Bruntingthorpe - 18/08/08 to Leicester, restored and extended "6" - to Bruntingthorpe - mid 2018 to St Athan - 2019 to SWAM
